“Welcome to high school” was the recurring theme at STM on August 27th when Grade Nine Orientation took place. The prefects showed our newest Knights around the school before a captivating presentation by guest speaker Andy Thibodeau.
The day started out with eager future Knights receiving their timetables for the new school year. Questions about what classes or lunch they shared with friends were followed by both cheers of excitement and looks of disappointment.
Our Principal, Mrs. Fortino-Bozzo, gave the grade nines a warm welcome and Stephen Cattafi, our Student Council President, reassured the grade nines about STM’s sense of community. When the topic of "Frosh Week" came up, the new Knights seemed a little worried and nervous but as Stephen joked that they “…might even get a free donut out of [Frosh Week]”, the tension evaporated.
The grade nines then went on a tour of the campus, escorted by the prefects. After getting a sense of where they would be going on the first day of school, some anxiety was eased. However, it was clear that there was still a little nervousness as some of their main worries kept popping up throughout the tours. Three major concerns were: Will I get lost? Will the grade twelves hurt me? Will the halls be so crowded I`ll be crushed to death?
Andy Thibodeau, with hilarious stories of his own high school experiences, encouraged the new Knights “...to get involved!” His words of wisdom excited and entertained the group. Andy addressed both the myths and stereotypes of high school, showing how untrue and funny they are. His entertaining performance ended the day on a happy and positive note.
To the grade nines: your enthusiasm made the orientation a success and we wish you the best throughout your years here. Welcome to STM!
