Free the Children has stated that “every day, women around the world spend a cumulative total of 200 million hours collecting water for their families [and] 80% of illnesses in developing countries are linked to poor water and sanitation.” In order to provide more people with clean water, without having to travel hours to retrieve it, Free the Children has started the "We Create Change" campaign.
Free The Children has set a goal of providing 100,000 people with clean water for life. How, might you ask, can this organization do this? Pennies, and lots of them. As you may have heard, the penny is being eliminated from Canadian currency. The "We Create Change" campaign was initiated so that the penny could go out with a bang.
Did you know $25 can provide one person with clean water for the rest of their life? This is where the penny comes in to play. See, 2,500 pennies make up $25, as well as fill a "penny bag." A penny bag is a bag provided by RBC that, once filled, can be given back to RBC, who will take the pennies raised and donate it to Free the Children.
So come on STM, start searching under couch cushions and open up your piggy banks because in this case, one lucky penny can help save someone’s life.
