It was a pinnacle year for the Jr. Boys' Volleyball team, culminating in a silver medal against their one true rival of the season - St. Jean de Brebeuf. “Early on it was clear that this would be a medaling team, even with a few bumps along the road due to illness and injuries resulting in some unexpected losses early in the season. The boys made it clear going into the second round that we were a winning team,” stated coach Ms. McIlveen.
Number 12, Ian Fraser, thoroughly enjoyed the season, saying, “It was great that we all got to see lots of the court, so we all contributed to such a successful season.” Team captain Horia Burela added, “The only expectation I had of this team was to make it to the championship and we made it!”
Near the end of the regular season, Brebeuf was caught with an illegal player. For a few days the team was worried that they would have to face Brebeuf in the quarter or semi-finals as a consequence of Brebeuf misunderstanding or missing a constitutional rule. Ms. McIlveen said, “It would have been a shame if we had to face Brebeuf early in the playoffs. It would have been anyone’s game, but it is always great to have the two best teams face off in the finals.”
Coach Luciani only had great things to say about the team and the season. “I am so proud of the boys. Their hard work and dedication was a two year process for most of the team. Last year we finished in seventh place, so I was determined to coach the team to a championship and well, they did it. They met all of my expectations for the season, utilizing a pretty complex offensive system. Unfortunately, we couldn’t adapt to two specific plays that Brebeuf kept throwing at us. I am very excited about the future of this team. The Senior team now has a great foundation for the next few years.”
