On October 16, 2012, nine students from St. Thomas More and St. Mary Catholic Secondary Schools had the opportunity to attend Trailblazers: Meeting Women in Law Day. This is a day-long educational experience in Toronto featuring keynote speaker, The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean. It is an annual event sponsored by Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN)that welcomes female high school students from across Ontario to meet women who have made a difference to equality rights through their careers in law.
The grade 12 students, along with their law teachers Miss Leone and Mr. Brown, participated in the annual Persons Day Breakfast to mark the anniversary of the 1929 "Persons Case" that declared women equal under Canadian law. The students had a chance to hear the former Governor General and later, to meet and ask her questions at a private reception. In the afternoon, the students toured Osgoode Hall, the University of Toronto Faculty of Law School, and visited Gowlings Law Firm. This event will surely not be forgotten and will, perhaps, inspire some of these young women to become legal advocates.
