It’s been over a year since the Hamilton community lost a shining star. On August 20 of 2012, Sydney Alexandra Wood sadly passed away. The young basketball superstar passed away from an AVM brain aneurism while participating in a soccer tournament in the United States of America.
Sydney Wood was loved by the Hamilton community. She played basketball for Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and soccer for Mount Hamilton. Sydney was special, no matter the challenges life presented her, she always had a smile on her face. Those dimples lit up the playing field as she would continuously encourage her friends and team mates to be the best that they could be.
Purple, Sydney's favourite colour, sprouted everywhere after her sudden passing: there were purple Sydney bracelets, “Purple For Sydney” dress days, and many touching tributes appearing on Facebook. St. Thomas More also altered their basketball jerseys, placing a purple heart with the initials S.W. on the left sleeve.
Sydney was a talented, beautiful and spirited young lady who will never be forgotten. Not a day goes by where we don’t miss her and remember her wonderful personality and ‘one of a kind’ soul.
We know that Sydney has gone to be with the Lord -- to watch over her family, her friends and everyone who had the blessing of knowing her.
#11 on the field, #13 on the court, but #1 in our hearts.
