STM’s Breakfast Program: A Healthy Way to Start Your Day
By: Amal Mohamed
We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day; it gives us energy and gets us ready for the school day. But it seems as though not enough students at STM were starting their day with a healthy breakfast. To fix this, STM's very own Breakfast Program was created. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, approximately 90-150 students visit Room 116 to pick up a snack before attending morning classes.
The Breakfast Program started with the Live It Up Girls club, whose objective was to educate the school community about the importance of a healthy breakfast. Through this campaign, it was realized that the majority of students were not eating breakfast at all, and the group decided to do something about it. Students, staff and parent volunteers began dedicating their time to this important program, and it continues to this day.
Food choices vary from fruits and bagels to cheese strings, yogurt, and, occasionally, chocolate milk. All food choices have to follow Healthy Guidelines, and according to student volunteers, it seems that the most popular food choice is the cheese strings! Snacks are not only given to students before school, but throughout the day if necessary.
Buying groceries to feed the school community costs a lot of money. Hundreds of dollars are needed monthly to purchase food and supplies. Teachers and volunteers also have to pick up these groceries and set up the breakfast room accordingly for students. Remember to thank teachers and volunteers for their dedication next time you decide to pick up an apple or yogurt from the breakfast room. Also, don’t forget breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Go to room 116 for great food and bring your friends!
