There is a new disease affecting senior students at STM. Early symptoms include lack of focus, laziness and difficulty deciding goals. It’s called "Senioritis," and it doesn't discriminate; it attacks any student, from the best to the struggling. With the stress of applying to universities, colleges, or simply figuring out what they want to do with the rest of their lives, senior students are beginning to lose their incentive and motivation.
Already, it's become difficult to manage schoolwork, applications, a job and a social life for many, and it is estimated that, by spring, nearly every senior student will be suffering from this disease. Due to anxiety caused by the feeling that all life decisions must be made now, and by the amount of schoolwork being assigned by teachers, students are beginning to find it more and more challenging to motivate themselves to do homework and study.
Look at the symptoms. Do you have them? If you don't, I envy you! What's the cure? First off, remind yourself that these are the years that truly count. When colleges and universities look at your applications, would you prefer they see outstanding or just mediocre marks? Secondly, make homework fun! Sounds tough, I know, but it’s very possible! Create a study group with some of your closest friends and help each other with the concepts you don't quite understand. It's a great way to encourage you to do your homework, and it allows you to spend time with your friends in a supportive environment. Lastly, don't overwork yourself! Take a break. Working on an assignment for hours on end can make your brain hurt. Set aside some time to tweet, eat, update your Facebook status, text a friend, or even just lie down on your bed and do nothing.
If you are fortunate enough to have not yet experienced "Senioritis", save yourself! Stay organized with your school work and post-secondary applications. Investing too much time in one or the other may cause you to become overwhelmed. Another way to prevent yourself from getting struck by this disease is to find an activity that helps you relieve stress. It can be anything that you enjoy doing, like a sport or a fun activity. The choice is yours. Do you want to end senioritis, or let it end you?
