As an avid soccer fan and former player, I enjoy watching soccer. This year, I had the opportunity to watch our Senior girls' soccer team in action, both at practice and during games.
The Lady Knights tested their limits practicing every day after school in freezing cold and boiling hot conditions, in preparation for the season. They participated in many tournaments in and around the Hamilton area, finishing in the semi-finals at the Ancaster High Tournament and winning the Redeemer College Tournament. These victories are partially due to their coach, Mr. Raso, who dedicated much of his time to ensure that these girls grew both individually and as a team.
On Tuesday May 21, 2013, the girls played their quarter final game against the solid Bishop Tonnos team. STM played one of its best games of the season battling BT. The score remained 0-0 during regulation time, bringing them into double overtime still with a score of 0-0. The game then proceeded to dreaded penalty kicks. It was intense, and the game remained tied. STM goalie, Alora Fortino made some excellent saves during the penalty kicks but, as hard as they tried, the girls fell short.
It was an unfortunate end to the girls' season, but they should be very proud of their fantastic performance. Grade 10 sweeper, Alexis Georgakopoulos said “I was very proud with the way my team played this season. We worked hard and never gave up on ourselves or each other, which was very important. As for next season? There is always room for improvement!”
Good job this season ladies, and good luck to those players who will be graduating this year.
