On November 7, 2012, STM’s senior football team faced Bishop Tonnos Titans in the semi-finals with a grand victory of 39-10. Students from BT came to our field to cheer on their team and participate in some friendly school competition.
Before the game, Mr.Fuciarelli said, “[The football team was] fired up after having two weeks off and [felt] well rested and ready for the game.” STM was ready for this game and ready to buyout, watching the game in very cold conditions. Alexa (Grade 12) said the game was “cold but worth it.” Students wore several layers, blankets, and in the case of one of the MORE News editors, (clean) socks as gloves. Even a BT student, Victoria (Grade 12) was quoted saying, the “weather is freezing.”
This game was intense. In the first seconds of the game, BT had the ball and was close to scoring a touchdown. STM stole the ball and got their first touchdown within the first minutes of the game. My photographer and I were jumping up and down as STM got touchdown after touchdown.
It was difficult getting to the BT students for quotes during this game due to the caution tape on the stands and asphalt, dividing the two schools. At first, I thought this was a little extreme, but when the caution tape on the stands was ripped there was verbal conflict in the stands. As a MORE News reporter, I was allowed to cross this new divide to better report upon the game. However, my photographer and I were heckled by the BT students with calls of “Get off our side” and “STM Sucks,” the last became a kind of song.
Despite the fact that I was personally affected by this negative kind of school spirit, at least they had some. The BT fans "out-spirited” us! A BT student named Rose told this reporter that “STM [had] less spirit,” and usually STM outshines BT with our spirit.
Luckily, the score is not determined by cheers. Mrs. Fortino-Bozzo stated that she was “Enjoying the quality of play, [and that] Senior Knights [were] giving all they’ve got.” She also excitedly stated that “It’s Knight Time!” Even Laura, a BT student, told us that “STM seems to have a really strong team.” Mr. DeStephanis, the game's commentator, remarked that the game was a “really big win.” He also stated that “defence played fantastic; they turned the game around… set the tone of the game,” allowing the team to “…take the game to bed.”
