As the spirit of Christmas continues to build, so do the crowds in stores. With seasonal sales causing chaos among customers desperate for discounts, only one question remains – “How am I going to finish my Christmas shopping with only two weeks left?” It’s a question asked by most students, especially with the stress of exams and culminating activities on the horizon. There is only one solution, one way that you can finish your Christmas shopping on time and on budget: bargain shopping.
Bargain shopping guarantees high valued presents with a cost of no more than $50. This is the perfect time to buy, give and become a professional bargain shopper!
Start with the most predictable member of your family – mom. Anything sentimental or thoughtful will surely please her. St. Thomas More drama teacher Ms. Demsar shared her hopes about what she wants to receive from her children on Christmas: “A certificate that says, 'I owe you a movie together' or a 'night in together.' Something that has to do with spending time together.” Love – the best gift to give to someone, plus it’s free!
However, if you want to surprise your mom with something special you can’t go wrong with an item from Bath and Body Works. At the moment, the store is bursting with holiday spirit, from sales on holiday mini candles, with scents such as fresh balsam and twisted peppermint (2 for $5), to anti-bacterial soap, with scents such as winter cranberry, vanilla bean and winter candy apple (4 for $15). Make sure to include a card praising your mother for all that she has done for you. It is sure to be one of the best Christmas gifts ever, while spending under $15!
Now that you have mom out of the way, take care of the simpler and most neglected member in your family– dad. Nothing pleases a dad more than his "man cave", so give him something that he can use in it. It’s simple: dads are either sports fanatics or music lovers. With HMV’s $5 to $15 blowout sale, you’ll be sure to find something great there. From Don Cherry’s $10.99 biographies on DVD to the newly re-mastered albums of The Beatles (“1” and “Abbey Road”) for $15, it’s guaranteed that your father will enjoy anything you give him – as long as he gets to use it in his "man cave."
Let’s move on to one of the siblings. Do you have a brother? One word, one name, one movie will bring your brother joy on Christmas day. The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final installment in the Dark Knight trilogy, flew to DVD on December 4th, just in time for the upcoming holidays. When asked about what they wanted for Christmas, STM boys didn’t hesitate to respond with, “The New Batman.” Grade 11 student, Mackenzie Copeland, was one of the many excited for the release: “It’s one of the best movies ever!” The record-breaking movie is being sold for the low price of $14.99 in stores like Best Buy, with special features including behind-the- scenes footage and much more. Just under the budget, this movie will make him smile as wide as the Joker.
If you are fortunate enough to have to buy for a high-maintenance sister, nothing pleases a girl more than makeup, clothes and boys. Since only two of those options are appropriate, try looking at sales from Reitmans and Sephora. At Sephora, kits are being sold anywhere from $5 to $25. At only $10, you can buy the cat eye kit, a tiki set lip glaze trio and even more! Sales also include the nail wand, a usual $20 purchase for the low price of $15. At Reitmans, most items are on sale for only $20, including shirts, sweaters and pants.
By following these simple guidelines and budget, I guarantee you will have a happy and wallet-friendly Christmas. But remember, the most important gift to give is a bit of love and thanks. In the wise words of Sir Pierre Corneille, “the manner of giving is worth more than the gift.” With that being said, I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
